"Once I found my first event role, the pace and no two days ever being the same completely sold it to me!" - Laura Kahtan, Director and Founder of WOWOW Events, in an inspirational interview for TempTribe.
Today, we’ve managed to snatch up Laura Kahtan, the founder of WOWOW Events, and get her to answer a few questions! Laura, you are such an inspiring and empowering figure. Tell us a bit more about your journey in the hospitality industry.
I started life in TV production, never even contemplating events but once I found my first event role, the pace and no two days ever being the same completely sold it to me! My love for organisation and structure also fits nicely! I started my career on the corporate side, moving into private events after several years and now am in the fortunate position, I am able to do both – the best of both worlds!
WOWOW Events is a fairly young company, but you’ve already managed to make quite a name for yourself. You focus predominantly on corporate and private events – what sets you apart from the competition? What do you think attracts the clients to your style of event planning?
I think being a smaller agency, we are able to really focus on our client’s needs and expectations. We can be reactive and provide dedicated attention when required. I think clients are attracted to our event planning style based on our experience – we are able to focus on what THEY want and keep them on track, working together rather than dictating the way they should be working. Everyone is different and has their preferred methods – we simply facilitate what they want to achieve.
On the private side, I got married myself 18 months ago, so fully understand how brides are feeling, having been in their position. There are lots of stresses and emotions around weddings, so to have someone on your team that understands and can support you, in ways family and friends can’t, is both helpful and a comfort.
You use the CAD planning technology when designing events for your clients. Do you believe CAD is a crucial and groundbreaking tool in event planning?
CAD is something we have used for years, it is often sold as an expensive option to clients but it doesn’t have to be. For us, it’s invaluable and means there are no surprises! Clients have the opportunity to see how everything fits together and works beforehand, thereby alleviating any unknown risk – which can only be a good thing!
WOWOW Events is not just about the event planning. You also have a podcast! Could you tell us a bit more about that?
The podcast feels very new-age (I’m not the technical one at WOWOW!) It was born in order to offer tips and tricks to subscribers (some not even using our planning services) and enables us to demonstrate experience whilst specifically referencing events where we might have been working for other companies. We also plan to interview industry experts to speak about specific event areas – it’s a work in progress but will be coming soon! Some episodes have already been recorded. I also have a personal podcast, interviewing inspiring women in all different fields (Womenspiration the podcast)
Tell us more about your cooperation with TempTribe – what made you choose us as your temporary staff provider? What do you predominantly look for and appreciate when booking staff?
I have always found TempTribe provide professional, helpful, punctual staff – all factors which are super important when they are representing WOWOW. I have found staff who smile and use their initiative always add to the success of an event and ultimately, help us put together the best possible team.
What was the most spectacular event that you have worked on with WOWOW Events so far?
All of our events are spectacular but one that springs to mind was ‘bringing the outdoors indoors’ for a wedding where we built a 15ft lemon tree inside a marquee, piece by piece. Logistically, they wanted a venue in central London that was easily accessible for guests but still sticking to an outdoor theme. We were able to create a beautiful scene with lots of fabulous florals and a packed faux piazza dancefloor.
