Last week we caught up with Blake Henderson, Operations Director at Create Food - one of London's leading event catering companies.
What do you love about working at Create?
Create has given me the opportunity to work alongside some amazing people and brands, in some fantastic venues and for some high end clients. I began to work for Create in 2012 and I’ve been able to watch the brand grow not only in size, but knowledge, skill and menu creativity.
What does a day in the life of an Operations Director look like?
My day to day role at Create involves lots of emails and meetings, building and maintaining relationships with our suppliers, while overlooking every event and tasting that Create cater for. I assist the event managers in my team with any questions, problems or queries they may have about any of their up- coming jobs.
What inspired you to work in the Hospitality industry?
I love the feeling you get after you’ve had a really hard event, due to a tricky client or venue, and you watch everything fall into place just the way you planned it all those weeks or months ago when you first started to organise it. I love the mad rush when you’re tight or strict on timings or when every guest heads to the bar or cloakroom at the same time and you have to wrack your brain for the most efficient way to solve the problem.
How would you describe your team?
My team is made up of 6 strong members, who each bring something different to the table. Some have years of experience and have run some of the biggest events Create have been involved with. Some are fresh to the industry, bring new ideas and creativity to the team. Overall we are a dynamic and hardworking team!!
What qualities do you think makes hospitality staff stand out?
Hospitality staff that are keen, want to learn, want to be at work and enjoy being at work always stand out to me. Staff that care about the event itself, care how the event runs and ensure that any queries are dealt with smoothly.
What is your favourite memory from working at Create?
My favourite event while working with Create would be back in 2015, during our Christmas run at Old Billingsgate Market. We had a client with a huge budget to spend on their Christmas party, which allowed the venue to be completely transformed from its usual standard. They had a lot of amazing theming, production and food stations. To top it off, they had a top DJ playing as well.
Why do you enjoy working with TempTribe?
Staff from TempTribe are always happy, friendly and smiley. They often go above and beyond what we expect of them. They are always hardworking and a joy to be on site with. We thoroughly enjoy working with TempTribe and we like to think TempTribe enjoy working with our team at Create just as much!
